Transparent motion is always more likely for plaids moving along oblique directions than for plaids moving along cardinal directions (ARVO 2001 demo).

In order to observe the major result, just keep fixating the red point. After a while, you should see the two gratings sliding over each other instead of a plaid moving to the right. But if you tilt your head by 45 degrees, you should see the transparent percept much faster! You can obtain the same result by choosing an oblique direction for the plaid (e.g., 45 degrees): then the gratings start sliding faster than when the plaid is moving in an horizontal direction.
